Dr Helen Morris
My holiday reading
- Christopher J. H. Wright, The Mission of God and The Mission of God’s People, Zondervan.
“One of my main tasks this summer is to read the work of a theologian that I’ve heard lots of good things about but have so far not got engaged with much myself: Christopher J. H. Wright. I’m finding his work on the Old Testament very helpful as I prepare to take on the second year Old Testament module. His impressive tomes are informing my thoughts as I develop the ‘Exploring the Mission of God’ course for the 2016/17 cohort. An aspect of his work that I find particularly compelling is how his wealth of knowledge on the metanarrative of the Bible as a whole informs his reading of individual passages. Of course not everyone agrees with all of his conclusions (I’ve also been reading a book by DeYoung and Gilbert who take a different stance on the missional import of the Exodus narrative, for example). However, it is indisputable that he has made an impressive contribution to both biblical scholarship and missiology or, as he calls it, ‘The Missional Basis of the Bible’.”
Helen Morris is a Lecturer at Moorlands, and has just completed her PhD. Helen previously taught Sports Science at Loughborough, and spent four years in Thailand as part of a Youth With A Mission team, formed in response to the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami.
