This online course prepares those whose first degree isn’t in theology, or a related subject, to commence theological studies at master’s level.

About The Course

This short course runs entirely online. It introduces participants to core areas within academic theology, including biblical hermeneutics and Christian doctrine. Its aim is to familiarise participants with the knowledge and skills needed for theological studies at postgraduate level, such as key terminology and methods. The course is participant-led, in that commence and completion dates are arranged individually with the course leader. Thus, it is designed to fit around participants’ work and other responsibilities.

Price

  • 50% discount for those who have been accepted onto one of Moorlands postgraduate programmes.

Course Dates

The course is designed to take 50 hours. The usual expectation is that participants take between one and three months to complete the course.* There is flexibility within this, however, since commence and completion dates, and assessment deadlines, are arranged individually with the course leader.

*If successful completion of this course is required as part of acceptance onto Moorlands MA Applied Theology programme, we recommend that students commence the course by or before the beginning of May to enable a September start on the MA programme.

Training Team

The core content for the course is delivered via a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). This content includes videos, explanatory text, and links to relevant resources. The course leader is Helen Miller. Helen is also the programme leader for Moorlands MA Applied Theology. She will assist participants as they work through the course and provide feedback on assessments, which are marked on a pass/fail basis.

Course Content

The course consists of five units, each of which is designed to take 10 hours to complete. These are:

  • Introduction to Theology
  • Interpreting the Bible: Part 1
  • Interpreting the Bible: Part 2
  • Historical Theology
  • Theological Reflection

Each unit introduces participants to a key field within academic theology, providing an overview of that field before diving into greater detail on specific topics. Each unit also introduces participants to key scholarship within the field and signposts them to further reading. Each unit concludes with a short assessment. Each assessment must be passed for participants to successfully complete the course.
